Appleseed α

Appleseed Alpha, released in 2014, serves as a narrative reboot of the long-standing cyberpunk franchise originally conceived by manga artist Shirow Masamune. Produced as a feature-length computer-animated film directed by Shinji Aramaki, the project was intended to reintroduce the characters Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires to a new generation. By focusing on the duo's early days as mercenaries in a post-apocalyptic New York, the film sought to strip away the established lore of the previous film iterations to focus on a grittier, character-driven origin story.

The visual design of the film was handled by Sola Digital Arts, utilizing high-end motion capture and 3D rendering to achieve a distinct, hyper-realistic aesthetic that departed from the traditional cel-shaded look of its predecessors. Masamune’s original vision, which emphasized complex biomechanical anatomy and sprawling industrial environments, was translated into this digital medium with a heavy focus on texture and lighting. Upon its release, the film was noted for its technical ambition and for staying true to the bleak, tech-noir tone that defined the original 1980s manga volumes.
