Where it came from
ReLIFE originated as a digital web manga series, serialized on the Comico platform beginning in 2013. The story follows Arata Kaizaki, an unemployed twenty-seven-year-old who is offered a chance to restart his life as a high school student through a mysterious experimental program. This narrative explores themes of social anxiety, the regrets of early adulthood, and the ephemeral nature of adolescence, effectively capturing the anxieties of a generation struggling with the pressures of post-university life in Japan.
Yayoi Sou designed the series with a distinct, clean aesthetic that prioritizes emotional resonance over complex action. The minimalist character designs and soft, expressive linework were well-received for their ability to convey subtle shifts in tone, transitioning from comedy to poignant drama. The series gained significant traction in both digital and print markets, eventually spawning a physical volume release, an anime adaptation, and a live-action film, solidifying its place in contemporary slice-of-life manga history.
