Where it came from
Requiem of the Rose King, created by manga artist Aya Kanno, began its serialization in Monthly Princess in 2013 and concluded in 2022. The series offers a dark, reimagined take on the life of Richard III of England, drawing heavily from the historical context of the Wars of the Roses and the dramatic framing of William Shakespeare’s plays. Kanno aimed to explore themes of gender identity, fate, and obsession, positioning her protagonist in a complex, morally ambiguous light that challenges traditional historical narratives.
The visual design of the series is noted for its gothic elegance and dramatic, high-contrast imagery, which reflects Kanno's signature emphasis on emotional turbulence and aesthetic fluidity. Upon its release, the manga was well-received for its bold reinterpretation of historical figures and its intricate, layered plotting. Its influence grew significantly within the shōjo and historical fantasy genres, eventually leading to a dedicated following and a 2022 anime adaptation that brought Kanno's vision to a wider international audience.
