Richard Wagners geistige Entwickelung: Versuch einer Darstellung der Weltanschauung Richard Wagners mit Rücksichtnahme auf deren Verhältnis zu den philosophischen Richtungen der Junghegelianer und Arthur Schopenhauers. Die Weltanschauung Richard Wagners in den Grundzügen ihrer Entwickelung. 1

Published in 1892, this scholarly work by Hugo Dinger represents a significant effort during the late 19th century to synthesize Richard Wagner’s artistic output with the rigorous philosophical frameworks of the Young Hegelians and Arthur Schopenhauer. As Wagner's influence permeated European intellectual life, academics sought to move beyond musicology to map the composer’s internal evolution, treating his librettos and theoretical writings as serious contributions to existential and political thought.

Dinger’s study was composed during a period of intense intellectual re-evaluation of Wagner, focusing specifically on how the composer’s worldview shifted from revolutionary fervor to Schopenhauerian resignation. The design and structure of this volume reflect the tradition of German academic treatises of the time, characterized by exhaustive sourcing and a desire to elevate Wagner's complex, often contradictory ideas into a coherent philosophical system that could be studied alongside the heavy hitters of 19th-century German idealism.
