Roland Cashel. With illustr. by Phiz

Roland Cashel was serialized between 1848 and 1849, emerging at a time when Charles James Lever was shifting from his early, boisterous military tales toward more complex, multi-layered narratives. Lever, an Irish novelist known for his sharp observational wit, sought to blend the picaresque adventures he was famous for with deeper psychological examinations of social standing and inheritance. The novel was initially released in monthly installments, a standard practice for Victorian fiction that allowed authors to build suspense and sustain readership over long periods.

The illustrations for the original publication were provided by Hablot Knight Browne, widely known by his pseudonym Phiz. Having famously illustrated many of Charles Dickens's works, Phiz brought his characteristic etched style to Lever's manuscript, focusing on the character-driven vignettes that defined the Victorian reading experience. Phiz’s contributions were instrumental in establishing the visual tone of the book, capturing both the high-stakes drama and the domestic nuances of Cashel’s journey, and his collaboration with Lever remained a hallmark of the period's illustrated literature.
