Roland Cashel. With illustr. by H.K. Browne

Roland Cashel was first serialized between 1848 and 1849, emerging during a prolific period for Irish novelist Charles James Lever. The work reflects the Victorian appetite for sprawling, adventurous narratives often published in monthly installments, a format that heavily influenced the pacing and episodic structure of Lever's storytelling. The text captures the socio-political tensions and character-driven escapades characteristic of Lever’s mid-career output.

The illustrations for the original volume were provided by Hablot Knight Browne, widely known by his pseudonym Phiz. Browne was the premier illustrator for many of the era’s most celebrated novelists, most notably Charles Dickens. His etchings for Roland Cashel were designed to heighten the dramatic and often satirical tone of the narrative, utilizing a detailed, gestural style that helped define the visual language of nineteenth-century serial fiction.
