Where it came from
Rose of Versailles Kids serves as a lighthearted, reimagined spin-off of Riyoko Ikeda’s seminal shojo masterpiece, The Rose of Versailles. Created as a tribute to the enduring popularity of the original historical drama, this collection shifts the intense political intrigue and tragic romance of the French Revolution into a whimsical, chibi-style aesthetic. The series retains the core recognizable character designs—such as Lady Oscar and Marie Antoinette—but reinterprets them through a comedic lens suitable for a younger audience.
Ikeda utilized these illustrations to explore the softer, more playful side of her iconic cast, moving away from the gravity of the Bastille and toward situational humor. While the original manga is widely credited with revolutionizing the shojo genre by blending historical fiction with complex character development, the Kids collection stands as a stylistic departure. It has been received primarily as a collector's novelty, appealing to long-time fans who appreciate Ikeda's ability to pivot between high-stakes melodrama and endearing character studies.
