Brother My Brother...

Brother My Brother..., known in Japan as Oniisama e..., was serialized by Ikeda Riyoko in the magazine Margaret between 1974 and 1975. Emerging in the wake of the immense popularity of her masterpiece The Rose of Versailles, the work solidified Ikeda's role as a pioneer of the shojo manga genre. It was conceived as a serious exploration of the social hierarchies, complex emotional landscapes, and intense interpersonal relationships within an elite, all-female high school environment.

Ikeda employed a dramatic, ornate aesthetic typical of the mid-1970s, utilizing sweeping character designs and heavy emotional interiority to convey the protagonist's struggle for belonging. While it was initially overshadowed by the historical scale of her previous works, the manga gained a profound, enduring legacy following its 1991 anime adaptation, which brought Ikeda's sensitive treatment of themes like adolescent alienation and social class to a much wider international audience.
