Where it came from
Rumi-chan's Classroom, or Rumi-chan no Genshō, is a surreal comedy manga series created by the veteran mangaka Tsunoda Jirou. Originally serialized in the early 2000s, the work showcases Tsunoda's distinctive approach to bizarre, deadpan humor that often defies traditional narrative structures. The series centers on the eccentric life and inexplicable experiences of the title character, Rumi, as she navigates her daily life and interactions, reflecting a unique blend of absurdity and slice-of-life storytelling that distinguishes it within Tsunoda's diverse body of work.
The design and tone of the series are indicative of Tsunoda's long-standing career, which shifted from his earlier fame in horror and supernatural manga toward increasingly idiosyncratic comedic projects. The illustration style emphasizes expressive, unconventional character movements and expressions, which serve to heighten the comedic impact of Rumi's unpredictable behavior. While it remains a niche entry in the landscape of manga, it has been recognized by enthusiasts of alternative comedy for its daring commitment to its own peculiar logic.
