Where it came from
Rurouni Kenshin, created by Nobuhiro Watsuki and serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump starting in 1994, emerged during a peak era for historical action manga. The series blended Meiji-era history with shonen conventions, following the journey of Kenshin Himura, a former assassin seeking redemption. The Official Colored editions were developed to revitalize the classic artwork, applying digital colorization to Watsuki's original black-and-white panels to provide a more immersive experience for modern readers.
The design goal behind the colored volumes was to emphasize the kinetic energy of Watsuki's sword-fighting sequences while highlighting the nuanced character designs that defined the series. By adding depth through color, the publishers aimed to distinguish these editions from the standard tankobon releases. Upon their release, these volumes were received by fans as a premium way to revisit the series, often praised for maintaining the integrity of the original line art while breathing new life into the iconic settings of 19th-century Tokyo.
