Where it came from
The Saint Seiya Kanzenban was released in Japan between 2005 and 2006 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Masami Kurumada’s seminal manga series. Published by Shueisha, this edition was designed as a premium, definitive collection, featuring larger page dimensions and high-quality paper stock that surpassed the original tankōbon releases. It notably included the original color pages from the series' initial serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump, which had been previously omitted from many collected volumes, providing fans with the artist's intended visual presentation.
Kurumada’s work, which blends Greek mythology with shōnen action, remains a cornerstone of the genre. The design of these volumes emphasizes a sleek, sophisticated aesthetic consistent with the 'perfect edition' format, often featuring updated cover illustrations by Kurumada himself. Upon release, the Kanzenban was well-received by long-term collectors and critics who appreciated the archival quality of the set and the inclusion of expanded character profiles and previously unreleased side materials, cementing its status as the standard reference set for the Saint Seiya franchise.
