Samurai Shodown: Haohmaru's Journey to Hell

Samurai Shodown: Haohmaru's Journey to Hell, illustrated by Shiro Ohno, was released during the height of the Samurai Shodown (Samurai Spirits) phenomenon in the 1990s. As SNK's premier weapon-based fighting game franchise dominated arcades, the demand for ancillary media led to various adaptations, including manga that expanded upon the stoic character archetypes defined in the game. This specific volume serves as a serialized expansion of the narrative lore, focusing on the wandering protagonist Haohmaru as he navigates the tumultuous landscape of feudal Japan.

Shiro Ohno was tasked with translating the frantic, high-stakes energy of the arcade fighter into the rhythmic format of a manga. The aesthetic choices lean heavily into the rugged, ink-heavy visual style prevalent in seinen martial arts comics of the era. While it was received primarily as a collectible tie-in for existing fans of the game, it stands as a testament to the period's efforts to deepen the character backstories of iconic SNK fighters through sequential art.
