Sānguó Huànxiàng

Sānguó Huànxiàng, or Romance of the Three Kingdoms Fantasy, represents a distinct entry in the genre of manhua that reimagines classic Chinese literature through a contemporary, stylized lens. Created by Zhou He, the series situates itself within the tradition of adapting the epic historical narrative of the Three Kingdoms, employing a visual aesthetic common to early 2000s fantasy manga. The work emerged during a period of significant growth in the Chinese domestic comics market, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional cultural motifs and the preferences of young readers accustomed to the pacing and character tropes of international manga.

The design philosophy behind the work focuses on the dramatization of historical figures, emphasizing ornate character designs and dynamic battle sequences. By reinterpreting the legendary generals and strategists of the Wei, Shu, and Wu states as heightened, almost supernatural entities, Zhou He sought to inject a sense of kinetic energy into well-trodden source material. While it was received by readers as a localized venture into the historical fantasy genre, it remains a reflection of the era's ambition to modernize classic folklore for a new generation of serialized print media.
