Where it came from
Sayounara Ryuusei, Konnichiwa Jinsei, known in English as Goodbye Dragon Life, originated as a light novel series written by Hiroaki Nagashima and illustrated by Kisuke Ichimaru. The series debuted on the user-generated publishing platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2013, riding the wave of the massive surge in popularity for the 'reincarnation' fantasy subgenre in Japan. Its success led to a formal light novel publication by AlphaPolis, beginning in 2015, featuring character designs that leaned into classic fantasy aesthetics while centering on a dragon who chooses to live a quiet life as a human.
The narrative follows an ancient, powerful dragon who offers himself up to be slain by a hero, only to be reincarnated as a human villager named Dolan. The series is noted for its meditative approach to fantasy, focusing less on grand conflict and more on the protagonist's appreciation for simple, mundane joys. This thematic choice resonated with readers who sought a reprieve from high-octane battle tropes, eventually inspiring a manga adaptation by Kurono and a television anime series, which further solidified its place in the modern light novel landscape.
