Where it came from
School Zone is a collection of short stories by Mengo Yokoyari, originally serialized in seinen manga magazines between 2008 and 2011. The work captures a distinct era of Yokoyari's career, preceding her massive success with Oshi no Ko, and focuses on the complexities, anxieties, and shifting dynamics of high school students. It serves as a precursor to her later explorations of darker, more intimate human relationships.
The art style is characteristic of Yokoyari's early aesthetic, blending delicate character designs with a poignant, sometimes melancholic atmosphere. The stories are framed through a lens of emotional realism, exploring the fragility of youth and the social pressures inherent in the school environment. Upon its release, it was noted for its nuanced perspective on adolescent development and helped establish the author's reputation as a compelling chronicler of modern, tangled social lives.
