Where it came from
School Zone is a classic work by the renowned horror manga artist Inuki Kanako, often celebrated as the queen of Japanese horror manga. Published in the 1990s, the collection reflects the quintessential atmosphere of Japanese school-based ghost stories, a genre that Kanako mastered by blending psychological unease with surreal, grotesque imagery. This volume serves as an anthology of short, eerie tales set within the seemingly mundane confines of a Japanese elementary school, capturing the specific anxieties of childhood through a dark, supernatural lens.
Kanako’s distinctive artistic style, characterized by detailed, unsettling character designs and a heavy use of shadow, was instrumental in defining the visual language of 90s horror manga. The collection was produced during a period when horror anthologies were gaining significant traction among Japanese youth, positioning School Zone as both a tribute to urban legends and a reflection of the intense pressures inherent in the school environment. It remains a foundational piece for collectors interested in the evolution of modern horror storytelling.
