SD Gundam: Musha Maruden

SD Gundam: Musha Maruden was serialized in Comic BomBom throughout the late 1990s, emerging as a prominent entry in the long-running SD Gundam franchise. This series focused on the Musha Gundam aesthetic, which reimagines classic mobile suits as traditional Japanese samurai and feudal warriors. It was created to revitalize interest in the SD (Super Deformed) line, blending lighthearted, exaggerated character designs with traditional mecha combat tropes that resonated strongly with the younger demographic reading the magazine at the time.

The manga was written and illustrated by Ichishiki Masato, who brought a signature kinetic energy to the Musha Gundam universe. Masato aimed to emphasize the camaraderie and whimsical nature of the characters, moving away from the more somber tones found in mainline Gundam narratives. The series was well-received for its clear, expressive paneling and its ability to tie directly into the Bandai model kit line, serving as both an independent narrative and a companion piece to the physical toys.
