SD Gundam Sangokuden: Brave Battle Warriors

SD Gundam Sangokuden: Brave Battle Warriors is a manga adaptation originating from the ambitious multimedia initiative launched by Bandai in 2010. The series was conceptualized to merge the futuristic aesthetics of the Gundam franchise with the classical Chinese historical epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, effectively reinterpreting legendary warriors as SD—or Super Deformed—robotic counterparts. This crossover was designed to appeal to both younger demographics and long-time fans of the Gundam model kit line, serving as a narrative anchor for a wide range of plastic model releases that were released concurrently.

The manga version was illustrated by Takano Atsunori, who focused on balancing the high-octane mechanical combat inherent to the Gundam brand with the dramatic, character-driven politics of the source material. By streamlining the complex historical rivalries into a more accessible, action-oriented format, Atsunori succeeded in creating a cohesive companion piece to the television animation. While intended primarily as promotional material for the model kits, the series gained recognition for its creative character designs that successfully blended historical armor aesthetics with iconic mobile suit weaponry and color palettes.
