Where it came from
The Shiba Inu sketchbook by Masanori Morita serves as a focused compilation of character studies and preliminary drafts from the artist best known for his work in the shonen manga genre, particularly the hit series Rookies and Rokudenashi Blues. Created as a supplemental volume for dedicated fans, it provides a window into Morita's draftsmanship and his specific approach to sketching the expressive, often comedic dog character that recurs in his side illustrations.
The design of the sketchbook emphasizes Morita’s gritty yet highly dynamic line work, stripping away the polish of finished manga pages to highlight the underlying energy of his pencil studies. It was received by the manga community as a collector's insight into his creative process, reflecting the late 1990s and early 2000s trend of releasing professional art materials that demystified the labor-intensive production of weekly serialized manga.
