Where it came from
Shimeji Simulation began serialization in 2019 within the pages of Comic Cune, following Tsukumizu’s critically acclaimed debut, Girls' Last Tour. The series shifts from the stark, post-apocalyptic atmosphere of their previous work to a surreal, school-based setting, focusing on the character Shijima Tsukishima. It was conceived as an exploration of isolation and social anxiety, utilizing a dreamlike, occasionally absurdist visual language to externalize the internal struggles of navigating the transition from withdrawal back into the broader social world.
The art style is signature Tsukumizu, characterized by soft, deceptively simple lines that contrast with profound, often existential philosophical inquiry. While the aesthetic leans into the 'slice of life' genre, the narrative is frequently punctuated by bizarre, non-sequitur events that challenge the reader's perception of reality. The work has been received as a contemplative, avant-garde entry in contemporary manga, praised for its unique ability to blend gentle humor with deep, melancholic undertones.
