Where it came from
Shin Glorious Asuka Gang!, written and illustrated by Takaguchi Satosumi, emerged during a period of experimentation within the seinen and avant-garde manga scenes. Known for a distinctively stylized and hyper-kinetic aesthetic, Takaguchi crafted the series to push the boundaries of traditional action narratives, focusing on eccentric character designs and unconventional panel layouts that mirrored the chaotic energy of the underground art world.
The series remains a cult classic among enthusiasts of 1990s experimental manga. It is widely regarded as a showcase of Takaguchi’s technical proficiency and his penchant for blending gritty urban themes with flamboyant visual flair. While it did not reach the mass market success of mainstream shonen titles, it gained a dedicated following for its bold refusal to adhere to standard genre conventions of the time.
