Where it came from
The Glorious Asuka Gang! Gaiden is a supplementary volume to Takaguchi Satosumi’s cult manga series, Asuka Gumi. Originally emerging from the vibrant landscape of Japanese shōjo and bōsōzoku-themed manga in the late 1980s, the work reflects the author’s signature interest in delinquent subcultures and dramatic, stylized aesthetics. This volume serves as an expansion of the primary narrative, providing additional depth to the characters and the high-tension social dynamics that defined the original run.
Takaguchi Satosumi is noted for his distinct, sharp visual style and his ability to blend intense action with melodramatic tropes. In this gaiden, he leans into the theatricality of the school-based gang conflicts that made his work stand out within the genre. Upon release, the series was received as a stylistic outlier, appreciated by readers for its unapologetic commitment to the tough-girl aesthetic and its departure from more conventional shōjo themes of the era.
