Shin Kozure Ookami: Lone Wolf

Shin Kozure Ookami, or New Lone Wolf and Cub, was created by the legendary writer Kazuo Koike as a direct continuation of his seminal 1970s chanbara epic. Launched in the mid-1990s, the series was conceived to revisit the tragic narrative of Ogami Itto and his son Daigoro, expanding upon the philosophical and violent themes that defined the original saga. The project served as a bridge between the classic era of gekiga and the shifting aesthetic sensibilities of the late twentieth century.

The visual identity of this series was handled by artist Hideki Mori, who took on the daunting task of capturing the stark, ink-heavy atmosphere established by the original illustrator, Goseki Kojima. Mori’s approach favored a more contemporary, refined line work while maintaining the series' signature grim stoicism. Upon its release, it was received as a respectful homage that appealed to both long-time devotees of the franchise and a new generation of manga readers interested in the foundational tropes of the samurai genre.
