Where it came from
Soldier is a gritty, hyper-realistic seinen manga series crafted by the legendary writer Kazuo Koike, known for his ability to weave complex narratives of duty, violence, and stoicism. The series was designed to explore the psychological toll of warfare and the internal code of the modern warrior, reflecting a post-war shift in Japanese media toward darker, more character-driven storytelling.
The illustrative style associated with the series emphasizes clean, cinematic line work and dynamic pacing, which became a hallmark of Koike's collaborative projects. Upon its initial release, the work was received as a sophisticated addition to the action-drama genre, lauded for its uncompromising approach to its subject matter and its departure from more traditional, heroic tropes common in manga of the era.
