Where it came from
Sidekick, written by J. Michael Straczynski with art by Tom Mandafounis, was published by Image Comics starting in 2013. The series was created to explore the darker, psychological consequences of life as a costumed sidekick after the death of a celebrated mentor. It centers on Flyboy, who struggles to transition into a life of independence and normalcy while dealing with the trauma of his past and the sudden shift in public perception.
The creative direction by Straczynski focuses on deconstructing the tropes of the superhero genre by grounding them in a harsh, realistic narrative. The artwork by Mandafounis complements this tone, utilizing a visual style that captures the protagonist's sense of isolation and disillusionment. Upon its release, the series was noted for its cynical perspective on the traditional mentor-sidekick dynamic, contributing to the wider trend of revisionist superhero storytelling in independent comics.
