Where it came from
Sidekick, Volume 1, collects the initial issues of the creator-owned comic series written by J. Michael Straczynski and illustrated by Tom Mandaf. Released by Image Comics in 2014, the series was conceived as a deconstruction of the superhero genre, specifically focusing on the often-overlooked relationship between a hero and their sidekick. Straczynski, known for his work on The Amazing Spider-Man and Rising Stars, sought to explore the psychological aftermath for a sidekick when their mentor figure is suddenly removed from the narrative equation.
The visual direction provided by Tom Mandaf leans into a gritty, grounded aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the flamboyant costumed hero tropes found in mainstream comics of the era. The narrative serves as a dark character study, investigating themes of trauma, abandonment, and the loss of identity. Upon its release, the series received attention for its cynical tone and its willingness to challenge the traditional tropes of the mentor-protege dynamic within superhero fiction.
