Where it came from
Song of the Long March, or Chang Ge Xing, was created by the acclaimed Chinese mangaka Xia Da. First serialized in 2011, the series is a historical drama set during the Tang Dynasty, following the journey of Princess Li Changge as she seeks vengeance for her family after a palace coup. The work is widely noted for its meticulous aesthetic, blending intricate ink-wash painting techniques with traditional manga paneling to create a distinct visual language that honors its historical setting.
The series earned significant critical recognition for its sophisticated narrative and its departure from conventional genre tropes, winning the Golden Monkey King Award for Best Comic. While its publication in China was temporarily suspended due to a dispute between the artist and her publisher, the work remains a landmark in contemporary Chinese manhua, praised for its complex female lead and the depth of its research into the political and social landscape of the seventh-century imperial court.
