Where it came from
Released in 2024, this special one-shot comic was created by IDW Publishing to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the character Knuckles the Echidna, who first appeared in the 1994 video game Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The narrative, penned by long-time franchise writer Ian Flynn, serves as a standalone retrospective that honors the character’s evolution from a misunderstood guardian of the Master Emerald into a pivotal hero within the Sonic ensemble.
The publication follows IDW’s established tradition of releasing celebratory specials that bridge legacy lore with modern characterizations. The design and artistic direction were curated to reflect the high-energy aesthetic associated with the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series, focusing on a balance of nostalgic references and contemporary storytelling. It was received by the fanbase as a respectful tribute to the character’s legacy, further cementing Knuckles' importance in the expanded Sonic universe.
