Where it came from
Sousou no Frieren, written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, began serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday in April 2020. The story explores the aftermath of a classic fantasy quest, focusing on Frieren, an elven mage who outlives her mortal companions, as she grapples with the passage of time and the emotional depth of the relationships she previously took for granted.
The series is noted for its contemplative pacing and melancholic atmosphere, which subverts traditional high-fantasy tropes by shifting the narrative focus from the journey's conclusion to the lingering process of mourning and personal growth. Tsukasa Abe’s art style, characterized by soft linework and expressive, subtle character acting, has been widely lauded for its ability to convey the weight of Frieren's immortality, contributing significantly to the manga's critical success and multiple award wins, including the Manga Taisho prize.
