Where it came from
Spriggan, written by Hiroshi Takashige and illustrated by Ryōji Minagawa, first appeared in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 1989. The series emerged during a period of high-octane speculative fiction in Japanese manga, centering on the ARCAM Corporation and its elite agents, known as Spriggans, who are tasked with protecting artifacts of an ancient, advanced civilization from falling into the hands of militaristic entities.
Ryōji Minagawa's design work on the series is noted for its gritty, detailed aesthetic, which captures the high-stakes, international espionage tone of the narrative. The manga was widely received as a definitive example of the techno-thriller genre, blending archaeology with science fiction, and it maintains a lasting legacy for its kinetic action sequences and complex world-building.
