Where it came from
Starting With a Lie, authored by Liang Azha, is a prominent title in the genre of danmei, or boys' love, manhua. It was serialized online, gaining significant traction within the Chinese digital comics landscape for its character-driven narrative and the dynamic interplay between its protagonists. The series reflects the broader trends in modern Chinese web-comics, where serialized storytelling allows for slow-burn character development and thematic exploration of academic and personal life.
The art style, characterized by clean lines and expressive character designs, is tailored to emphasize emotional subtlety and the aesthetic preferences common in contemporary manhua. Liang Azha’s approach focuses on the intimate growth of the characters, navigating the social pressures and internal conflicts inherent to their youth. Upon its release, the series garnered a dedicated following, eventually leading to a physical release that serves as a tangible record of its widespread influence and its role in bringing web-based serialized narratives into print collections.
