Storia della marina Pontificia dal secolo ottavo al decimonono

Published in the late 19th century, this comprehensive work by Father Alberto Guglielmotti serves as the definitive historical account of the Papal Navy. Guglielmotti, a Dominican friar and a noted historian of Italian naval affairs, meticulously compiled centuries of records spanning from the 8th century to the 19th. The project was conceived as a rigorous academic effort to document the maritime activities of the Papal States, which played a surprisingly active role in Mediterranean naval engagements and the defense of the Italian peninsula against Ottoman expansion.

The text is highly regarded for its scholarly approach and the depth of archival research utilized to reconstruct the administrative and military evolution of the Papal fleet. Guglielmotti’s writing style is classic for the historiography of the period, emphasizing factual precision and the strategic importance of the naval forces under the Vatican's jurisdiction. It remains an essential reference for historians studying the intersection of ecclesiastical governance and maritime power in pre-unification Italy.
