Where it came from
Submarine 707F, created by mangaka Satoru Ozawa, originated as a seminal work in the military manga genre, serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday during the early 1960s. The series followed the tactical underwater missions of Captain Kenji Minami and his crew, gaining significant cultural traction for its grounded, detailed depiction of maritime technology and submarine warfare. It served as a major inspiration for subsequent mecha and military adventure manga, establishing a template for high-stakes naval drama.
The Magma Convoy iteration represents a specific arc or thematic extension of Ozawa's long-running franchise. Ozawa, renowned for his meticulous research and realistic drafting style, aimed to elevate the genre beyond standard adventure tropes by focusing on technical authenticity and the claustrophobic tension of submarine combat. While the series emerged during a period of rapid technological fascination in postwar Japan, it remains respected by aficionados of vintage manga for its enduring influence on the 'hard' military subgenre.
