Superman Barom 1

Superman Barom 1, created by Takao Saito in 1970, emerged during a transitional period in Japanese manga when the 'henshin' or transformation genre was beginning to gain significant traction. Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday, the series follows two boys who merge their distinct personalities to become the powerful hero Barom 1. The narrative reflected the contemporary interest in body-horror elements and psychological duality, setting it apart from the more straightforward hero archetypes prevalent at the time.

Takao Saito, best known for the long-running Golgo 13, utilized his signature gritty, realistic artistic style to ground the supernatural premise of Barom 1. The design of the titular character and his grotesque antagonists was influenced by the darker aesthetic trends of the early 1970s. While the manga enjoyed a dedicated following and spawned a live-action tokusatsu adaptation, it remains a notable example of Saito’s ability to navigate different genres, maintaining a cult status among fans of classic shonen manga.
