Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale

Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale was released in 2017 as the first feature-length film in the Sword Art Online franchise. Created by Reki Kawahara, the film serves as an original story bridging the events between the Mother's Rosario arc and the Alicization arc. It was developed to explore the concept of augmented reality through the lens of the fictional Augma device, shifting the narrative focus from full-dive virtual reality to a game played in the physical world, which allowed the creators to integrate real-world environments with digital gaming elements.

The film was directed by Tomohiko Ito, with character designs by Shingo Adachi, who maintained the aesthetic established in the original light novels and television series. By moving the action into the real world, the production team aimed to capture a sense of immediate danger and spectacle that differed from previous entries. The film received positive reception for its high-quality animation production and its successful expansion of the franchise's lore, eventually becoming a notable commercial success that solidified the series' enduring popularity.
