Where it came from
Taikouhi Kouho dakedo, Kenjitsu ni Ikou to Omoimasu, known in English as I'm a Princess Candidate, but I'd Like to Live Simply, originated as a web novel written by Seo Yuri. It belongs to the popular Japanese 'isekai' and 'villainess' literary subgenres, where protagonists find themselves transported into a fictional narrative—often a romance game or novel—and must navigate complex political and social hierarchies. The story follows a protagonist who, thrust into the role of a high-ranking candidate for royal consort, chooses to prioritize personal stability and a quiet life over the high-stakes drama typical of the genre.
The character designs and illustrations that define the print editions were crafted to lean into the light novel aesthetic, utilizing soft, elegant line work typical of modern shoujo-influenced fantasy series. The work was well-received within the light novel community for its subversion of common tropes, shifting the focus from overt romantic conquest to pragmatic problem-solving. By centering on the protagonist's desire for a modest life despite her extraordinary circumstances, the series struck a chord with readers looking for a more grounded take on imperial palace intrigue.
