Where it came from
Takeda Katsuyori is a significant historical novel written by Nitta Jiro, first published in the 1970s. The work serves as a biographical account of the final head of the Takeda clan, documenting the decline of the house following the death of Takeda Shingen. Nitta Jiro, known for his meticulous research into Japanese history and mountaineering, sought to portray the tragic human element behind the political collapse of a once-powerful Sengoku-era dynasty.
The novel is highly regarded for its focus on the psychological pressures faced by a leader burdened with maintaining a crumbling legacy. By shifting the narrative focus from the legendary Shingen to his successor Katsuyori, Nitta explores themes of generational duty and the inevitability of historical forces. It remains a staple of modern Japanese historical fiction, valued for its somber tone and technical attention to the social structures of the period.
