Where it came from
Takemitsu Zamurai, illustrated by Taiyo Matsumoto and written by Issei Eifuku, was serialized in Big Comic Spirits beginning in 2006. The series explores the life of Seno Soichiro, a ronin who arrives in Edo with a wooden sword, intentionally distancing himself from the violent traditions of the samurai class. The narrative is noted for its meditative pace and deep psychological examination of peace in a period defined by martial expectation.
Taiyo Matsumoto’s artistic contribution is central to the work's identity, utilizing a loose, expressive ink style that departs from conventional manga aesthetics to mirror the protagonist's internal state. Upon its release, the series received significant critical acclaim, winning an Excellence Award at the 2011 Japan Media Arts Festival and the 2011 Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, cementing its reputation as a sophisticated subversion of the jidaigeki historical genre.
