Tange Sazen (TEZUKA Osamu)

Osamu Tezuka's interpretation of Tange Sazen was released in the mid-1950s, representing a unique foray for the 'god of manga' into the established jidaigeki, or period drama, genre. Originally created by Fūtarō Hayashi in the 1930s, the character of the one-armed, one-eyed ronin was a cultural staple in Japan. Tezuka approached this adaptation by blending his signature cinematic, fluid paneling style with the gritty, sword-swinging traditions of samurai literature, aiming to introduce a more dynamic, action-oriented aesthetic to the legendary swordsman.

The design of this iteration reflects Tezuka's mid-career experimentation with character expressiveness and shadow. While he retained the iconic visual markers of the character, he applied his characteristic rounded, expressive character designs to the stark, violent backdrop of the Edo period. Though it is often overshadowed by his more prolific works like Astro Boy or Black Jack, this volume remains a significant study in how Tezuka successfully navigated and modernized classic literary archetypes for a younger, post-war reading audience.
