The Diary of Ma-chan

The Diary of Ma-chan, or Ma-chan no Nikkicho, was originally serialized in the children's magazine Mainichi Shogakusei Shimbun beginning in 1946. Created by Osamu Tezuka during the immediate post-war era in Japan, this work is widely considered his professional debut in the medium of manga. The strip was developed in a period of rebuilding and scarcity, intended to provide lighthearted, episodic humor for young readers who were navigating the transition into a new social and cultural landscape.

Tezuka’s visual style for the series was heavily influenced by contemporary American comic strips, particularly the clear, expressive character lines that would eventually evolve into the distinct aesthetic he pioneered. The narrative centers on the everyday antics of a mischievous young boy, utilizing simple, four-panel gags that allowed Tezuka to experiment with pacing and sequential storytelling. While relatively modest in scope compared to his later epics, the work was well-received by its youthful audience and established the foundational rhythmic structure for his subsequent contributions to manga.
