Ten: The Nice Guy on the Path of Tenho, written and illustrated by Nobuyuki Fukumoto, began serialization in 1989 in the magazine Kindai Mahjong. The series is regarded as a foundational work in the mahjong manga genre, notable for shifting the focus from simple competition to the philosophical and psychological gravity of high-stakes play. It established many of the stylistic tropes—such as intense internal monologues and exaggerated character designs—that would later define Fukumoto’s more internationally recognized work, Kaiji.

The narrative follows Ten Takashi, a kind-hearted mahjong player who finds himself drawn into an underground world of professional gambling. Fukumoto’s design intent was to explore the moral decay and existential desperation inherent in the 'tenho' style of play. While the manga served as a vehicle for complex mahjong strategy, it is perhaps most critically acclaimed for its character development, particularly the introduction of the fan-favorite character Shigeru Akagi, whose popularity eventually necessitated a spin-off series dedicated entirely to his own legendary history.
