Where it came from
That Year, Under the Starry Sky, authored by Mao Kong, emerged from the mid-2010s wave of emotive, character-driven manga focused on themes of nostalgia and transient connections. Created during a period when slice-of-life storytelling saw a resurgence in digital and print serialization, the work aims to capture the ephemeral nature of youth through atmospheric illustrations and quiet, contemplative dialogue.
The design of the series leans into a minimalist aesthetic, often utilizing soft line work and negative space to mirror the introspective tone of the narrative. Upon its release, the work was received as a gentle meditation on memory, finding a dedicated audience among readers who appreciate subtle storytelling over traditional high-stakes plots. Its visual style has been noted for balancing traditional ink techniques with the clean, modern sensibilities common to contemporary independent manga.
