Where it came from
The American Pressman was established in 1890 as the official monthly trade journal for the International Printing Pressmen and Assistants' Union of North America. It served as a critical resource for printing professionals, offering technical guidance on machinery, updates on labor legislation, and a platform for members to exchange expertise in an era when the industry was undergoing rapid mechanical transformation.
The publication's design evolved alongside the printing industry, often showcasing the latest advancements in color offset lithography and typography. While it functioned primarily as a pragmatic manual for shop-floor mechanics and press operators, it was widely respected for documenting the professional standards and industrial history of American unionized labor throughout the twentieth century.
