The Boys' and girls' companion [formerly The Sunday scholar's companion].

The Boys' and Girls' Companion originated as a continuation of The Sunday Scholar's Companion, a long-running periodical published by the Church of England Sunday School Institute in the late 19th century. Intended for a juvenile audience, the publication functioned as a moral and educational resource designed to reinforce religious instruction through uplifting narratives, illustrations, and instructive lessons suitable for Victorian-era domestic reading.

The transition in titling reflected a shift toward a broader appeal beyond purely academic Sunday school settings, aiming to capture the interest of young readers through a format that blended piety with modest entertainment. The design and editorial direction were steered by the Institute to align with contemporary evangelical expectations, emphasizing character building and the virtues of the Anglican tradition, and it remains a documented relic of the institutional efforts to cultivate literate, devout children in the British publishing landscape of the era.
