[The British national bibliography / Annual volume ] ; The British national bibliography : BNB. Annual volume. 1998, Vol. 1. Classified sequence

The British National Bibliography serves as the definitive record of new books and materials published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The 1998 annual volume was compiled by the British Library, which took over the responsibility for the publication from the Council of the British National Bibliography in 1974. This specific volume represents the transition of the archival process into the digital age, reflecting a time when bibliographic control was adapting to the rapid expansion of electronic publishing alongside traditional print media.

The design of the volume adheres to the standardized classification system established by the British National Bibliography, utilizing the Dewey Decimal Classification to categorize thousands of titles. The layout was intentionally structured for library reference and research utility, prioritizing ease of navigation and comprehensive data retrieval over aesthetic flourish. It stands as a vital institutional reference tool, created to ensure that the intellectual output of the British literary landscape was meticulously cataloged for future generations of scholars and bibliographers.
