The Cyclopaedia of India and of Eastern and Southern Asia was first published in 1858 by Edward Balfour, a surgeon and official in the Madras Army of the East India Company. Born from Balfour's deep interest in the natural and commercial resources of the region, the work was intended to consolidate vast amounts of information regarding the economic and scientific landscape of British India. Over the course of three editions, the project grew significantly in scope, reflecting the mid-19th-century colonial obsession with cataloging and quantifying the geography, flora, fauna, and trade practices of the Indian subcontinent.

Balfour designed the compendium to serve as a practical reference for administrators, scholars, and traders who required a comprehensive overview of local assets. The work is noted for its ambitious, albeit distinctively colonial, approach to gathering indigenous and scientific data, which earned it a reputation as an essential reference tool during the late Victorian era.
