The series centers on four legendary constables serving the Song Dynasty imperial court, each defined by a distinct personality and specialized martial arts technique. These characters were created during a prolific era of Chinese martial arts literature, intended to blend traditional investigative mystery with the grand scale of wuxia combat, quickly establishing a foundational archetype for the genre.

The narrative universe was conceptualized to balance the rigid structure of imperial law enforcement with the free-spirited nature of martial heroes. Wen Rui'an’s writing is noted for its imaginative, almost poetic combat descriptions and complex web of political intrigue.
