The history of the reign of the emperor Charles the fifth. With an account of the emperor's life after his abdication, by W.H. Prescott

This work originates from a long-standing scholarly tradition of analyzing the transition of power in early modern Europe. Originally authored by William Robertson in the eighteenth century, the text served as a foundational history of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. The inclusion of William H. Prescott’s supplementary account regarding the Emperor's life after his abdication reflects a nineteenth-century editorial effort to round out the narrative, bridging the analytical style of the Scottish Enlightenment with the more narrative-driven historical approach favored by American historians of the mid-nineteenth century.

The Oxford University Press edition serves as a definitive academic presentation of this combined historical study. By pairing Robertson’s comprehensive account of the Emperor's political reign with Prescott’s specific focus on the monastic retirement at Yuste, the volume provides a complete biographical arc. It remains a notable example of how historical texts are preserved and updated by subsequent generations of scholars to maintain relevance for academic and research libraries.
