The history of the reign of the emperor Charles the fifth. With an account of the emperor's life after his abdication by W.H. Prescott. Ed. by W.H. Munro

Originally penned by the Scottish historian William Robertson in 1769, this seminal work remains one of the foundational texts of Enlightenment-era historiography. Robertson’s detailed narrative explored the complexities of Charles V’s vast empire, successfully blending rigorous scholarship with a prose style that made complex political and religious shifts accessible to the reading public of the eighteenth century.

The specific edition edited by W.H. Munro incorporates the scholarly contributions of American historian William Hickling Prescott, who famously provided the extensive 'Account of the Emperor's Life after his Abdication.' This editorial collaboration sought to bridge the gap between 18th-century narrative techniques and 19th-century academic standards, resulting in a comprehensive resource that continued to serve as a standard reference for students and scholars of the Habsburg dynasty well into the early 20th century.
