The Kindred of the Wild: A Book of Animal Life

First published in 1902, The Kindred of the Wild stands as a seminal work in the genre of realistic animal fiction. Charles George Douglas Roberts, a Canadian poet and author, drew upon his intimate knowledge of the wilderness of New Brunswick to craft narratives that moved away from the anthropomorphic fables popular in the nineteenth century toward a more naturalistic, albeit dramatic, observation of animal behavior.

The collection is notable for its evocative illustrations by Charles Livingston Bull, whose work was highly regarded for capturing the raw intensity and movement of wildlife. The book was instrumental in establishing the 'animal story' as a serious literary form, garnering significant critical acclaim at the time of its release for its ability to bridge the gap between scientific observation and compelling storytelling.
